There's an emoji gap. We're taking it personally.

Rugby has one. Curling has one. Lacrosse — lacrosse! — has one. Pétanque is still waiting: tens of millions of players across five continents, and not a single key on the keyboard. Time to fix this typographic injustice.

And millions of casual games among friends — at the apéro, on the beach, at the campsite, on the village square — that nobody can type out.

Go on, check your keyboard. It isn't there.

Three stories, one missing emoji

01

Pétanque

Born in La Ciotat in 1910, pétanque has become the world's leading boules sport: 300,000 licensed players in France alone, tens of millions of casual ones, and a presence in 165 countries across five continents. From village squares to the boulodromes of Bangkok, it is a universal language of conviviality.

02

Emoji

Born in Japan in the late 1990s, emoji have become a global language, curated by the Unicode Consortium, which reviews new proposals every year. Rugby has one. Curling has one. Lacrosse has one. Pétanque — still nothing.

03

The pétanque emoji

In 2022, around the Mondial La Marseillaise, a first campaign called for a pétanque emoji: petitions, articles, thousands of supporters. Then nothing — no proposal was ever filed. This time, we're seeing it through. Final score included.

A global phenomenon, in numbers

Pétanque is just the tip of a vast family of boules games — bocce, lawn bowls, boccia, bowls, petanca… — united under an international federation recognized by the IOC. Tens of millions of players across five continents. And still no emoji to represent them.

🎳 is not pétanque: grooved steel boules, a wooden jack, a gravel court. A unique, instantly recognizable object — even as an emoji.
